Options:
Daytrips by bus from Sogndal and other destinations in the Sognefjord area from June 20 to August 28: The
Glacier Bus
To the travel options:
Jostedalen is a 50 km long valley stretching from the Sognefjord
to the northern end of the Jostedal Glacier, between this
giant glacier in the west and the alpine peaks of the Jotunheimen
Mountains in the east. The valley has it's shape from the
last ice-age, when millions of tons of ice did a thorough
construction job recreating the landscape in all of Northern
Europe.
To a traveller coming into Norway through Oslo or Bergen
it might seem like Jostedalen is both remote and impossible
to reach by any transportation. This is totally wrong. You
won't have any problems starting here at 6 in the morning
and arrive in downtown Oslo before 8.30. That is of course
by plane and car, but it just shows how short the distance
is. It's the same with Bergen, in fact Bergen is even closer.
And if you are travelling in Norway and wish to see and
do something special, then you should include Jostedalen
in your itenerary.
Driving from Bergen takes about 5 hours, from Oslo about
7 hours. That is, if you wish to take it easy and stop from
time to time.
Travelling :
FIRST OF ALL : You need a roadmap. There are several good
ones, just ask for one at a gas station or in a bookstore. Or even better, you have a GPS.
Norway is perfectly covered by Google Maps and StreetView, so also the road to Jostedalen. Take the time to check it out.
AND : There are several gateways to our area. Look for
Sogndal, Lom, Voss, Lærdal, Gol, Fagernes. From those
places it's easy to find the way.
A. From Oslo
From Oslo you have several options. You can travel
1) by car, (which is the best way),
2) by plane (bus from the Sogndal Airport)
3) by train (will also include bus and ferry, see Fylkesbåtane
i Sogn og Fjordane for time tables)
4) by bus (see Norway
Bus Express for time tables)
Details :
By car you have three serious options : The Hallingdal
road, the Valdres road or the Gudbrandsdal road.
The Hallingdal road is the shortest, but the Gudbrandsdal
road offers the most impressive scenery, especially the
Sognefjell Mountain pass at 1450 m.a.s.l.
The train option includes the famous Flåmsbana, and
a long ferrytrip
from Flåm to Kaupanger/Sogndal.
Hallingdal road : Drive route E18 to Sandvika, then route
7 to Gol, then route 52 to Borlaug crossing the Hemsedal
mountain, then route 16 to Fodnes, then ferry
to Mannhiller, then route 5 to Sogndal, then route 55 to
Gaupne, and finally route 604 to Jostedalen.
Valdres road : Drive route E18 to Sandvika, then route
E16 all the way to the Tyinkrysset. From there you have
two options for reaching the Fodnes ferry. One takes you
further on E16 crossing the Filefjell and later passing
Lærdal. The other one takes you across the Tyin mountains
down to Årdal, well worth a visit. Both options lead
to the ferry
between Fodnes and Mannhiller. From there you take route
5 to Sogndal, route 55 to Gaupne and finally route 604 to
Jostedalen.
Gudbrandsdal road : Drive route E6 to Otta (you pass Lillehammer),
then route 15 to Lom, then route 55 to Gaupne, driving the
impressive Sognefjell Mountain road and passing the innermost
part of the Sognefjord, and finally route 604 to Jostedalen.
All these routes takes you through a beautiful countryside.
For more detailed information on places to stop and things
to do, especially on the Gudbrandsdal road, please see Nortra
