Breheimsenteret lies at the entrance to the Nigardsbreen Nature Reserve, with a view of the characteristic icefall Nigardsbreen. The centre presents the natural resources of the Breheimen and Jostedalsbreen National Parks and the history and activities of the Jostedalen area.
Breheimsenteret lies right between the Jostedalsbreen and Breheimen National Parks. The area is full of varied nature, with glaciers, mountains, and waters. We want to present information about the local nature and about climate change. By seeing the exhibition and exploring the exciting glacial landscape, visitors can experience and come closer to nature. The centre allows school classes and pupils to get an up-close look of the glacier and the vestiges it has left in the landscape.
Ice and snow and flowing waters have played their part in forming the landscape around us into deep valleys and fjords, into high mountains and peaks. Glaciers provide a good deal of information about the climate after having expanded and melted away over the ages. The glaciers are mystical and exciting and attract people for adventures, research, and recreation.
The National parks
Glaciers emerge where there is an abundance of snow and cold summers. The Jostedalsbreen has evolved in a mountain region along a coast that is exposed to one low-pressure weather system after the other. The Jostedalsbreen and Breheimen National Parks include 9 of the 30 largest glaciers in Norway. The Jostedalen valley is the nexus between Jostedalsbreen, with its large areas of wilderness, and Breheimen, with its lush mountain farm valleys and dry highland regions.
More information about Norway’s national parks is available at the national parks website (in Norwegian).
Visitors have several excellent accommodation and dining options east of Jostedalsbreen and in the innermost part of Sognefjorden. This allows them to live close to several exciting activities and explore the local nature on their own in both summer and winter.
Activities in Jostedalen
